What You Can Do > As an Advocate

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

-Margaret Mead

  • Change comes from all directions. Grassroots organizations work from the bottom up. Marble halls of power work to define and defend policy.
  • Inform yourself. Follow a broad range of news.
  • Vote. The people you choose to represent you matter- they are your voice.
  • Write to your leaders. A letter to your U.S. Representative and/or Senator lets them know what you are thinking.
  • Learn the lingo. Understand and use these legislative terms.
  • Write an Op-Ed (opposite the editorial page) to spur relevant discussions in your community. Find your local news sources here.

  • The internet now offers everyone the opportunity to participate in newsgathering.
Sites like NowPublic feature crowd-sourced media stories. Also, SourceWatch lists sites regionally.
  • Maintain professionalism  to assure publication.
  • Reef Check  hosts community-based coral reef management around the world.
  • Spread the word. Social media is now the tool. Use it.
