Defend the ESA

As members of the Endangered Species Coalition (ESC), and through our diverse partnerships, OPS is working hard to protect the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) from regulatory proposals and initiatives seeking to strip vital protections from threatened and endangered species.

The ESA is America’s most effective law for protecting wildlife in danger of extinction. It serves as an essential safety net when state management has failed to protect imperiled plants, fish, and wildlife. Since its enactment, 99 percent of listed species have survived and hundreds more have been set on a path to recovery. The biodiversity crisis continues, with nearly a 70% decline in birds, amphibians, mammals, fish, and reptiles since 1970.

Congressional outreach. OPS has joined partners in Washington, DC to conduct a congressional screenings of Racing Extinction in defense of the Endangered Species Act. Besides visiting with key legislators, OPS also shared a link to its film to all members of Congress to raise an urgent call to protect this landmark piece of legislation.

Our outreach includes supporting key legislation to advance species protection, like the PAW and FIN Act, Wildlife Corridors Conservation Act, Wildlife Conservation and Anti-trafficking Act, and other critical legislation to prioritize and secure increased funding and interagency collaboration, and reform species and habitat protection in the United States.

Stop Extinction Challenge. As part of our collaborations with the ESC, OPS participates in this annual event where people across the country meet with their members of congress to advocate for endangered species. As part of this ongoing outreach, we are working to oppose regulatory rollbacks of critical provisions of implementing regulations of the ESA that were ushered through in past administrations, and are engaging with government agencies responsible for wildlife protection on key issues and providing recommendations to the current administration to strengthen the ESA and restore, expand, and enforce protections for imperiled wildlife and plants.

What you can do!

Join our call to global governments to halt the commercial trade in wildlifea leading threat to endangered species and the root cause of the pandemic.

Urge your members of Congress to cosponsor the PAW and FIN Conservation Act. You can contact your legislators via our partner AWI’s Compassion Index .

The extinction crisis is a real and present danger to wildlife across the globe. Watch Racing Extinction on Netflix!

Consider participating in the next Stop Extinction Challenge to let your congress member know how you feel about protecting endangered species.
